Better Body Tips The Busy Professional's Guide To Fat Loss
29.06.2007 - Issue # 4

Hi everyone, I hope you're training is going well, and you're beating the heat.  This week I've got a particularly controversial newsletter for you.

Dig in,

DA

P.S. Until July 1st, I am still accepting questions for the Best Question Contest.  It pays to play as the winner gets a special mystery gift.

Are Aerobics Are Making You Fat?
By Dale Andrew

The biggest complaint that most people have about doing their cardio (typically steady state aerobic training) is that it takes too long and it’s boring. I guess that’s two complaints.

My biggest problem with aerobic training is that you get better at it, and getting better means that the only way that you can continue to improve is by either running further or running faster. When you are burning lots of calories doing aerobic training, the body will actually adapt to this activity by storing more fat, effectively slowing the metabolism down.

Is there any joy in running 40 minutes to burn the same number of calories that you once burned in 30 minutes?

Unlike weight training, aerobic training eventually reaches an endpoint where you it no longer becomes aerobic. So, if you have to stop doing aerobic work to get the benefits you seek, why not just begin by doing some anaerobic work with interval training?

Of course, you’re probably asking yourself, “Could all those people plodding along for up to an hour on the treadmills, bikes, and ellipticals be wrong?” The answer is YES! Certainly, my email inbox, anticipating the several hundred emails that such a statement could initiate, is now begging me to explain myself. I will oblige by examining all the reasons that steady state aerobic exercise supposedly burns fat:

1. It burns calories. No argument, here. Of course, it only burns calories because the muscles are hard at work. There are several other activities that burn calories too – like weight training, sleeping, changing channels on the TV, etc. – sorry, no extra points for aerobic training!

2. The fat burning zone. Too bad, it doesn’t exist. It is amazing how many people are hell-bent on staying in the fat burning zone – a concept that the body burns a greater amount of fat during lower intensity aerobic exercise than it does at higher intensities. The problem here is one of misinterpretation. It is true that the body burns a higher percentage of fat at lower intensities, BUT the total calories burned are relatively low as compared with higher intensity exercise. At higher intensities you burn more total calories and thus more fat overall.

3. Aerobics makes the body an efficient fat burning machine. True, but upon further examination, this is not desirable. What? Well, muscle is the only tissue in the body that burns fat, and aerobic training makes muscles smaller and more efficient at using fat. Now, don’t get excited (If your car became more efficient at using gas, you’d be burning less of it. A smaller, more efficient fat burning machine is simply not effective.

4. Aerobic training raises metabolism. No, it does not. Metabolism is largely a function of how much muscle you carry. Since aerobic training does nothing to even maintain, let alone build muscle, it will do nothing to raise your metabolism. Sure, you’ll burn calories while you are doing aerobics, but will you burn any more calories at rest (the other 23 hours you are not working out!) as a result of aerobics? No. In fact, you may actually burn less.

Fish Oil Rules
By Dr. John Berardi

I consider fish oil to be an essential supplement for fat loss. Data from the University of Western Ontario shows that fish oil supplementation increases lean body mass (during non-dieting conditions), increases BMR (by up to 400kcal/day), decreases inflammation, and improves the ratio of fat/carb oxidized (sparing carbs, burning fat). Recommended dose: Start with 6-10g per day of total fish oil (assuming 30% EPA and DHA).

When it comes to nutrition, JB is the expert I turn to - and for good reason - he has a Ph.D. in Kinesiology (with a specialization in Exercise and Nutritional Biochemistry), has authored more than 200 articles, launched the nutrition system that is rapidly becoming the industry standard and oh yeah, long before all that, he was the 1995 Mr. Jr. USA Bodybuilding champion.

No More Fish Burps!
By Dale Andrew

As many of you know, I'm a big fan of supplementing with fish oil - for all the reasons JB pointed out.  But, many lower quality fish oils on the market give you fish burps.

I don't think I have to tell you but fish burps kill your chances with the ladies.  Men, well, we're men and we're probably willing to overlook it!

But, either way www.progradesystem.com has made sure that you don't have to settle for an ordinary "fish oil" when you get the absolute highest quality Essential Fatty Acid (Omega 3) available on the market today PLUS anti-oxidant power. Check out the orac value below of EFA ICON

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. You will NOT burp up a nasty fishy taste like other fish oils. EFA Icon is 100% fish-burp free!!!
